Ohio Tax Record for Vienna Township, 1826

Early tax records provide evidence for a variety of historical questions, from who lived in a given place to the relative wealth of taxpayers in a given time and place. What was taxed varied over time. Nevertheless, an analysis of tax records over time helps the genealogist trace individuals over time and helps the historian to re-create the economic life of a given individual or chronicle the development of a given place over time.

In 1826, the State of Ohio taxed residents for the ownership of real estate (land and houses), chattels (including animals), and personal property. Only persons who owned taxable property are represented in tax lists, so a full picture of Vienna residents cannot be created through tax lists.
