James C. Nolan emigrated from Ireland in 1839, too early to be a response to the Great Famine caused by the potato blight. On April 9, 1862, he enlisted as a Sergeant and was mustered into the 140th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment on September 4, 1862. He was mustered out on December 29, 1863, after the battles of Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. According to the 1890 Veterans Schedule, Nolan had been wounded and suffered sunstroke, and was discharged due to his wounds. In the 1900 and 1910 censuses, Nolan is listed as a farmer in Vienna.
