Military Service: Entered service (three-year enlistment), age 21, as Private, July 25, 1863, 2nd Regiment, Company M, Ohio Heavy Artillery; appointed Corporal, October 28, 1864; mustered out with company August 23, 1865.
Twenty-one-year-old Henry E. Pound enlisted as a Private on July 25, 1863, just weeks after the Battle of Gettysburg. He was promoted to Corporal on October 28, 1864, and mustered out with Company M on August 23, 1865.
Henry’s father and brothers served as Vienna’s blacksmiths, with a shop across from Township Green. The Pound family also sent to the Civil War Jacob’s brothers Noah H. Pound (105th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Co. B) and Jacob W. Pound, who served in the same company as Henry. Fellow Vienna resident Hiram Sheldon also served in the 2nd Ohio Heavy Artillery.
Henry married Laura Truesdell (died 1873) of Vienna in 1867 and Kate Gillmer (born 1844) in 1874. Laura Truesdell's brothers Allison Dural and Albert Truesdell served in the Civil War. The Federal Census of 1880 lists Pound as a retail grocer in Vienna. From 1875 to 1881 he served as Vienna's postmaster.
