Pennsylvania-born Samuel Ralston (sometimes spelled Rolston) moved to Vienna some time after the Civil War, and it appears that the coal boom in the Township may have been the reason. In the 1880 Federal Census Ralston is listed as a blacksmith and his son, Samuel E., is listed as an 18-year-old coal miner.

The 57th Pennsylvania fought at Gettysburg.
