The northwestern-most counties of Virginia was admitted to the Union on June 20, 1863, as West Virginia, the only state to secede from a Confederate state. Yet the 10th West Virginia Infantry was formed in 1861. We do not yet known when Jefferson Scott entered military service. He lived with his wife and grown children in Vienna Township at least by 1910.
