John G. Sofikitis spent his childhood on the island of Naxos, Greece. At the age of 24, he chose to further his education in the United States. His passion for education, study and teaching, led to a Bachelor of Arts degree from Youngstown State University in 1964. At Westminster College in 1970, he earned his Master of Education.

John G. Sofikitis

He began his 30-year career in the Fowler-Vienna School District as a mathematics and science instructor at Mathews High School in 1965 and became the high school principal in 1968. John was a true leader in education. His passion for education, kindness of spirit, and excitement for new challenges benefited his many students and proved invaluable to those educators he mentored. His example continues to provide a positive culture followed today within the school district.

John was most proud to have earned his citizenship in 1966. His patriotism was most evident when he would walk into a classroom and effortlessly speak of the greatness of America and the wonder of opportunities he had been afforded. Perhaps his greatest legacy for those in the school district is that he left us as better people and citizens.

John retired in July of 1995 so that he and his wife of 51 years, Stamatia [Stella] could relax with family and friends. They had two children, Irene and George. He was active in his church, Annunciation Greek Orthodox in Farrell, PA and in Sts. Raphael, Nicholas, and Irene Greek Orthodox Church located in their retirement community of Cumming, GA.
