Military Service: Enlisted as a Private, age 21, April 27, 1861, 19th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Company C; mustered out August 20, 1861. Enlisted as a Private, age 23, August 24,1862, 19th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Company C; killed on July 20, 1864, at Peachtree Creek, Georgia.

Within weeks of the attack on Ft. Sumter and the beginning of the Civil War, Selden (also spelled Seldon) Sloen Truesdell enlisted as a 21-year-old Private in the 19th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, first for three months, and then for three years. His brother James Jonathan Truesdell and cousin Albert Truesdell also served in the company. Three other brothers (Henry Shannon Truesdell, John Hilliard Truesdell, and Edwin Earl Truesdell) and two cousins (Allison Dural Truesdell and James Warren Leet) also served in the Union Army.

The Battle of Peachtree Creek, occurring as the forces of General William Tecumseh Sherman began the siege of Atlanta, was a victory for the Union Army. Truesdell was one of the estimated 6,506 casualties of the battle.
